Upgrading your electrical service can be a big job that needs to be done in one day. It’s entirely possible with preparation and coordination. Here’s what you need to know about upgrading your electrical service panel quickly.
When it’s time to upgrade, what is the process?
1. Calculate How Much Electricity You Require
The first step in changing out your electrical service to a larger size is to have your electrician calculate the load (in amperage) that your home requires. When making this calculation you should also consider any additions or renovations you are planning for now or in the future.
The standard sizes of services are: 100, 125, 200 and 400 amp. (400 amp, or larger, is only required for extremely large homes.)
2. Contact Your Hydro Company
The next step is to contact your local hydro utility company. There are several reasons for this, and it is very important that you don’t neglect this step.
Upon your request, the hydro company will provide you with a service design layout. The layout will outline their requirements and instruct your electrician where to install the meter base. They will also confirm they can provide you with the service size you are requesting as well as any alterations necessary such as tree trimming, trenching or adding hydro poles.
3. Your Hydro Company Disconnects Your Power
When you are ready to proceed, your electrician will schedule a time with the hydro utility to disconnect the power to your home, as well as coordinate an inspection with the Electrical Safety Authority on the same day.
Typically the job will take 1 day if carefully planned for. Once the power is disconnected, your electrician can remove the existing service and install the new service.
4. Inspecting the Work
An inspection is needed prior to turning the power back on to the new installation.
